»»  Low-voltage upgrades are safe to work with and can improve household communication.
Peek under any computer desk or behind the armoire that holds audio and video equipment , and you'll likely see a tangle of wires and cables. Stapled to the baseboard and popping out of holes drilled in the floor, such wires have been added over the years to meet the demands of new types of communication.
These include speaker wire, phone lines, coaxial cable, and internet CAT 5E.

Nonmetallic cable (NM cable) is easy to work with and inexpensive, so it’s not surprising that it is the most common type of cable used un household wiring. NM cable is usually sold in lengths of 25, 50, or 100 feet, or more. When in doubt, buy the larger package—it doesn’t cost much more and it may come in handy later. NM’s plastic sheathing does not offer much protection to the wires, so keep it out of harm’s way. If the cable might get wet, install UF (underground feed) cable, which encases wires in molded plastic. Whenever cable will be exposed—in a garage or basement—many local codes call for armored cable or conduit. Codes call for running NM through the center of studs so that drywall nails cannot damage it. If the cable is less than 1 ¼ inches from the edge of a framing member, install a protective nailing plate. Some codes required metal plates even if the cable is in the center of a stud. Take care not to damage wire insulation when working with MN cable. Slit the sheathing right down the middle using a sharp utility knife. To avoid slicing the wire insulation, don’t cut too deep. When cutting cable to length, leave yourself an extra foot or two. If you make a mistake while stripping, you can recut the cable and try again.

Here's with US the how to install the backbone of a new circuit- boxes to hold devices and cable to carry power. In a typical wiring project, installing cable and boxes can take four or five times as long as making the connections. It’s important to plan cable runs and box placement carefully. Getting the right materials all the materials you plan to install need the approval of your local building department. Local electrical codes will determine the type of cable you need, as well as whether the boxes should be plastic or metal.
We buy boxes that are as large as possible and make sure your boxes are large enough for the wires they will hold. Cable, boxes, receptacles, and switches are not expensive and can be returned if you do not use them.
So we typically buy more than you think you need to save trips back to the home center. We purchase plenty of the little items needed for a project too—straps or staples, nail, guards, electrician’s tape, and wire nuts of several sizes. This way we ensure that your project will have the quality and safety necessary to perform for many years ahead.
